WHAT IS CGI?

Definition.

CGI stands for Computer-Generated Imagery. It is a standard tool today in graphics. Many sectors use CGI. It is also referred to as 3D Rendering.

CGI can be dynamic or static. Dynamic imagery is considered 3D Animation.

So, what is CGI? It is creating imagery on a computer for many different purposes.

There are also various methods for creating CGI. Many industries use other software, such as 3DS Max or Houdini FX. For example, special effects from Houdini FX are used in the film industry, and architectural rendering using 3DS Max is used in real estate marketing.

3D outputs are often associated with CGI. However, CGI can also create 2D effects. Software such as Adobe After Effects or Photoshop is among the most commonly used. Hardware such as graphic cards make 2D and 3D CGI.

You might have seen CGI in many of the top movies. Such as Life of Pi, Avatar, Game of Thrones, and Pirates of the Caribbean. These appeal to the eyes and take you to the world of fantasy.

CGI brings entertainment to audiences with its beautiful images in the real world. Computer-generated images will create stunning, animated visuals using computer software. CGI is also known as 3D graphics. CGI allows you to create characters, scenes, and special effects in games, television series, and movies. You can even notice this advanced technology in advertising, engineering, virtual reality, and more.

The main reason many people are using computer animation or computer graphics is that it is an economical way to produce appealing visual content that thrills the audience compared to traditional methods. In the regular method, you have to create smaller versions of what you want to make and hire many people to direct the scene, and it is not safe for humans to create visuals that have many adventures.

Two different methods are used to create 3D computer graphics. The first uses algorithms to develop complicated fractal patterns. On the other hand, 2D pixel-based image editors can create vector shapes.

3D graphics software creates different forms, from complicated ones to triangle or quadrangle shapes. The software reacts to the surface and generates many effects. CGI has gained a massive name in the film market. It is used in digital film footage with the technique known as compositing. It is the standard technology known as the green screen.

THE HISTORY OF CGI

History.

The history of CGI technologies in film and advertising is a fascinating journey. It showcases the evolution from stop motion. With its integration into the art of storytelling. CGI has revolutionized the way filmmakers bring their visions to life. Allowing for the creation of stunning visual effects. Lifelike characters. Immersive worlds that were previously impossible to achieve. Here’s a brief overview of some key milestones in the history of CGI, including the roles of “Toy Story,” “Star Wars,” and “The Last Starfighter”.

Early experiments and innovations

1960s-1970s: This is when the foundation for CGI was started. With pioneering work by researchers and computer scientists. One of the earliest uses of computer animation in film was in 1968’s “2001: A Space Odyssey.” Directed by Stanley Kubrick, it featured the ground-breaking “Dawn of Man” sequence.

Tron (1982): Although not a commercial success then. “Tron” was revolutionary for its extensive use of CGI to create its digital world. It was one of the first films to showcase the potential of CGI in cinema.

The Last Starfighter (1984): This film was a big milestone in using CGI for visual effects. It utilized CG for all its spaceship battle scenes. Moving away from the traditional model-based effects. It is a feature film, one of the first to use CGI to such an extent. Marking a pivotal moment in the transition towards digital visual effects.

Terminator 2 Judgment Day (1991) & Jurassic Park (1993): These films were landmarks in the use of CGI to create lifelike characters and creatures. “Terminator 2” featured the T-1000, a shape-shifting robot. At the same time “Jurassic Park” brought dinosaurs to life on the screen. Like never before.

Toy Story (1995): Directed by John Lasseter. Produced by Pixar Animation Studios, “Toy Story” was the first feature-length film made entirely with CGI. It was a monumental achievement in animation. A massive commercial and critical success. “Toy Story” showed the potential of CGI not just for creating visual effects but also for storytelling, paving the way for the future of animated films.

Original Trilogy (1977-1983): The original “Star Wars” trilogy relied heavily on practical effects, models, and matte paintings. It also included pioneering work in motion control photography. However, the re-releases of these films in the late 1990s incorporated significant CGI enhancements, adding new scenes and effects.

Prequel Trilogy (1999-2005): George Lucas’s prequels to the original “Star Wars” trilogy extensively used CGI to create vast landscapes, intricate battle scenes, and digital characters like Jar Jar Binks. The prequels pushed the boundaries of what was possible with digital effects in cinema.

The success of films like “Toy Story” and the advancements demonstrated by the “Star Wars” prequels and other CGI-heavy films led to an explosion in CGI across the film industry. CGI became a staple in creating fantastical creatures and worlds and subtle enhancements to reality, such as de-ageing actors, augmenting practical effects, or creating dynamic backgrounds.

The history of CGI in film is a testament to the incredible advancements in technology and artistry over the past few decades. From the early experiments of the 1960s and 1970s. To the ground-breaking achievements of films like “Toy Story” and the “Star Wars” saga. CGI has continually expanded the possibilities of cinematic storytelling. Creating a real life immersive and visually stunning experiences that captivate audiences worldwide.

Market

An image speaks a thousand words. Many ad agencies will make use of images to convey the business message to the end users. Photos will imprint the brand images in the customer’s minds and make them connect with the brand. Whenever they see the image of the brand, they are reminded of you. You can see spotless pictures on the hoardings and wonder how they capture those beautiful shots. However, you would be amazed to learn that these are not shots on a camera, but these are the computer-generated images. Computer-generated imagery has become a powerful tool for advertisers to add life to imaginary pictures.

This advanced technology is quickly accessible for all and is also economical. There are many opportunities offered to the artists and designers to use their creative skills and come up with unique images that attract the audience and pull them to buy your products. There are many benefits that CGI offers to businesses in promoting their products and services.

The amount spent on advertisements, by companies can be reduced to a greater extent by using CGI. There is no need to hire professionals who have extensive knowledge of photography and videography. It uses the latest software to create the images you want in the ad instead of visiting the exotic locations to shoot the ad to get the best backdrop required to show your products in an appealing way to customers.

The best thing is that you do not need to waste time visiting locations and shooting the ad; instead, you can hire CGI experts. These people will use their skills and add the backdrop that you want for the products with just a few mouse clicks. The ad would look appealing and would grab the eyes of the audience. This cuts down the travelling expenses that otherwise must be paid to the photo shoots.

Advertisers can save a lot of time creating the campaigns where they would need to assemble the required crew to shoot the ad. The ad shoot will be completed in no time. There would be no delay when there is bad weather condition outside, travel hassles, and wait for the right weather or flowers to blossom in the places. The best thing is that CGI professionals can create product images with sun, rain, snow, and clouds in the photos. It is best to turn a flawed shot into a flawless one by removing the items that are not so necessary.

Most ad campaign’s aim is to grab prospective customers’ attention. CGI will help advertisers use their creative juices and create campaigns that give customers a seamless experience. The new customers can learn the benefits of your products with ease. For instance, if you sell the furniture for a bedroom or living room, you can visually provide the furniture’s images on how it looks in their bedroom. This will make the customers decide on whether to buy the furniture. It also lets them learn, whether the furniture complements the rest of the look in the home or not.

It is time-consuming for you to convert the bigger images into thumbnails. You may have to spend a lot of time improving the quality of images. Other things are challenging for you to convert into thumbnail images such as logos, labels, and close-up photos.

On the flip side, this also helps the designers create beautiful and flawless images in various sizes to improve their experience visiting e-commerce websites. When customers take a look at the pictures, it makes them feel like the real ones. This also shows the image at a 360-degree angle. The photos look like the ones they see in the physical stores.

There are a few industries, such as fashion, home decor and real estate where you have to provide images of the new products that you will launch before their release. You can create computer-generated imagery that can be used in pre-product launches.

Before the launch itself, you can get orders from customers. So you can generate a high ROI on products before they hit the market. This helps companies to reap huge profits in no time. You can also know the reaction of customers who first use the products. If there is any feedback for the product, you can make the changes accordingly. The best thing is that CGI will work better in the real-estate world where the exteriors and interiors can be designed using CGI.

This gives a visual of how the home will look after the interior designing part is done. 3D rendering is simple for customers to follow who do not know the blueprints and plans.

If the business is creating the same product in different models, it is time-consuming to take photographs of every model and it will cost a lot of money. However, CGI will use different colours, textures, styles, and features of the products in different variations to understand the difference between them.

CGI creates impressive visuals and even better advertising campaigns for various mediums. Quality images produced through CGI will give customers the best experience no matter what media you are watching. This will improve the brand image and conversion rate. You can increase the number of customers for products when the photos are crystal clear and convey each feature to them.

CGI offers endless opportunities to advertisers. You can create many things to grab the customers’ attention to the brand with little money and time. You can create different environments, which is otherwise not possible with photography. No limitation is set on what you can achieve through computer imagery. Top-quality CGIs are better than real-time photos. This conveys the story of your brand to the end-users. It gives customers a beautiful virtual experience.

You can even create video tours of the applications, products, and websites. It lets the customers thoroughly view the product and learn about each feature before investing their hard-earned money. Even when the person is not physically present at the store, they can still view the products sold by your brand precisely through the videos generated using CGI.

The images created with the help of computer imagery would help you on different platforms. Be it the audience viewing the videos or pictures on a PC, laptop or mobile, they get the same experience, and the content is delivered with high clarity. The computer-generated images will give high value to your content and boost the engagement rate.

When customers are immersed in learning about the product, they will invest in it. This will let them know all the features and functionalities of the product and how to use them effectively. Additionally, it will educate them on how the product would simplify their lives. It is best to promote the product in a beautiful way to end-users.

You can also use CGI in different phases of the product development lifecycle. The product prototype can be developed, and various features can be explored using CGI. Products that are available in different variations can also be introduced. Prototypes created with CGI will let you tell the manufacturers the specifications of the product.

Based on these specifications, the manufacturer will manufacture the product accurately. Everyone has a misconception that CGI is only used in movies. However, dismissing all those facts, CGI is also used to create appealing business ads and campaigns.

Top companies are making use of CGI to create websites and ad campaigns. Ad agencies use CGI to offer the best solutions to promote business on various platforms. When you show the customers realistic content and images, you can turn them into your potential audience.

The images will let customers understand your products better and make purchases. It is not possible for customers to always visit the brick-and-mortar stores to make purchases. So, CGI images are a boom for manufacturers to showcase the products while marketing and selling them briskly.

Property developers

Property developers make use of CGI to present their ventures to the customers. It is a boon for them to use this technology instead of using photographs. CGI is used in different phases of development from the time the project is kick started to its final sale.

Many governing bodies ask construction companies to provide the community’s images called verified views. So that it is easy to view how the project will be seen in the community even before it is built.

Using CGI, you can cover every tiny detail in the project and make the end-user understand the significance by showing the images. Developers are making use of CGI for their presales. Animations give the venture’s walkthrough and make them understand every necessary detail in the project.

Development companies are using virtual tours to sell homes and flats for the last few years. It gives the feeling of a real home to the buyers. If the buyer is staying in another place and cannot visit the venture, they can see these tours and decide whether to buy the home.

It gives the realistic feeling of a home. Even if the apartment and retail store is not built, you can still show the customers how it will look after it is constructed through the CGI images and videos.

Selling is all about telling a story to the customers. Buyers can experience the home and space where they will stay and live their dream life. The experience that they get through CGI images is priceless. It has become easier for people to tell a story about having a better life through CGI and get sales.

It has become a big brownie point for real-estate. Images will tell the story even when the project is in progress. When the buyers see the home space images, they can decide where the kitchen, bedroom and living room is going to come and where they can keep the furniture and how to decorate the home.

They can visualise their dream home and turn that one into a beautiful place by adding decorative pieces and furniture. With animation, you can even walk into the retail space. People get enthralled and excited to see their brand logo on the door when they step in. It gives the feeling of their own space being built.

The sparkling kitchen surfaces, living room area and bathrooms and the well-manicured park will impress them. They will start to fall in love with the home they are going to buy soon. It is all possible through CGI images.

CGI is used in advertising and marketing. Car companies can showcase their features to the audience without spending a hefty amount of money on ads using CGI. With one commercial, you can target different markets. The movie-like effects in the commercials will grab the attention of customers to make purchases.

CGI is known for its special effects. Not all movies will use these special effects, but few motion pictures and films designed in the history of science fiction backdrop will use CGI to create a fantasy world. For example, the well-known Avatar or one of the best series ever created, Game Of Thrones. Mixing CGI with live-action has given us a quality experience in which we can experience these stories to their full potential.

Producers do not have to spend a considerable amount of money, creating beautiful sets when CGI is available. With this technology, people can bring comic characters and hypothetical characters into life through movies. These characters are designed using CGI. The movies such as Spiderman are releasing sequels. There are a few scenes in the film, where CGI is used ultimately. TV shows will also use CGI for fight sequences.

These would be realistic. No one can know that the person is not real and is an imaginary character. You can take people to the magical world by creating beautiful characters and making them act. When you mix CGI with live-action, it creates a quality experience for the users and lets you beautifully tell the story.

3D Animation is one of the creative modes of marketing. It can bring lots of creativity to your marketing. These days, even jewellery sellers use jewellery animation to market their beautiful jewellery pieces.
