What to plan for.

  • Upfront modelling investment.

    A production-ready 3D asset takes real time to build properly. Rushed models punish every downstream deliverable. The upfront modelling stage is where discipline pays back across the full launch.

  • Serious tooling cost.

    Keyshot, 3ds Max with V-Ray, Cinema 4D with Redshift, Maya, ZBrush and Substance are all paid tools. GPU render nodes are enterprise-price hardware. Studios amortise the cost, in-house teams often cannot.

  • Steep learning curve.

    Photoreal modelling, lighting and material authoring take years to master. In-house teams typically outsource production even when they own the direction and brand system.

  • Revisions can be structural.

    A late change to product geometry or scene design can mean re-modelling, not just re-rendering. Structured reviews and locked geometry at agreed milestones keep this contained.

  • Hyper-realism has an uncanny window.

    Renders can look 'too perfect'. Believable imperfections, fingerprints, scratches, floor dust, environmental variation, are a discipline in themselves and take extra time to earn.

Before you start

Project checklist.

You do not need all of these on day one. But the more of this we have at brief, the faster the project moves and the fewer clarifying rounds it needs.

  • Reference and mood boards.

    Reference imagery, competitor visuals, tonal direction. Anything that describes what good looks like for this project.

  • Source data.

    CAD, architectural drawings, product photography, floor plans, sketches. The more accurate the source, the tighter the CGI.

  • Material and finish spec.

    Material intent with Pantone codes, physical swatches or reference imagery. Critical for brand-accurate colour and finish.

  • Brand system.

    Logo files, brand guidelines, typography, colour system. Feeds any on-screen graphics, endboards and campaign lock-ups.

Process

How the work is produced.

  1. STAGE 1

    3D modelling.

    The product, building or environment is built as a 3D asset from CAD, drawings, sketches or photographs. Topology and hierarchy are set up for reuse across every downstream deliverable.

  2. STAGE 2

    Camera setup.

    Virtual cameras are placed using photography principles, lens choice, focal length and composition. This is what makes CGI read as a photograph rather than a CAD screenshot.

  3. STAGE 3

    Lighting setup.

    A virtual studio is built around the subject, key, fill, rim, kicker. Softbox size, distance and diffusion are dialled in exactly as a physical shoot would be, but with no rig cost or crew time.

  4. STAGE 4

    Materials and texturing.

    Real-world material properties are applied, anisotropy, subsurface scatter, roughness, clearcoat. Colour references are matched against Pantone or physical swatches for brand-critical accuracy.

  5. STAGE 5

    Rendering output.

    The render engine passes the scene through GPU or CPU rendering, generating stills or frame sequences. Passes are separated for later control in post.

  6. STAGE 6

    Post-production.

    Photoshop, After Effects or Nuke work, colour correction, glow, grade, retouching and compositing. This is where the render is finished and matched to the brand's look.

How we run the engagement.

  1. STEP 1

    Starting a project

    You send everything you have, drawings, CAD, sketches, mood boards, reference. We do not need it all, but the more we have at kick-off, the faster the brief locks.

  2. STEP 2

    Reviewing information

    We review what you've sent and follow up on anything unclear. A short call or Teams meeting always helps, it prevents assumption creep and shortens the first review cycle.

  3. STEP 3

    Execution

    We build the model, lighting, materials and cameras against the brief. Our artists stay in constant contact, progress lands at agreed milestones rather than only at the end.

  4. STEP 4

    Reviewing

    We share draft renders and animation previews for feedback. You mark them up, we make the adjustments. Two review rounds is normal on a well-briefed project.

  5. STEP 5

    Approval

    You sign off on the drafts. From here, we lock the composition and move on to final rendering.

  6. STEP 6

    Final rendering and delivery

    Final resolution, full-quality lighting, materials and reflections. Delivered in the formats you need, ready for launch.

What does CGI stand for?

CGI stands for computer-generated imagery. It refers to still or moving visuals produced entirely in 3D software, used in film, advertising, product marketing, architecture and interactive experiences.

Is CGI the same as 3D rendering?

3D rendering is one stage of the CGI process, the step where a 3D scene is converted into a finished image or frame. CGI is the broader term, covering everything from modelling and animation through to compositing and final delivery.

What industries use CGI?

Consumer product brands, industrial and engineering companies, property developers and architects, hospitality, jewellery, automotive, furniture and film production all commission CGI as part of their creative and marketing pipelines.

Is CGI cheaper than photography?

For products with many variants, unbuilt architecture or content produced before manufacture, CGI is typically more cost-effective than photography. For simpler one-off imagery of a finished physical product, photography can still be the fastest route.

Can CGI be produced before a product exists?

Yes. With clean CAD or design intent, CGI can be produced before the physical product is manufactured. This is how many launch campaigns, crowdfunding pages and investor decks are built.

How long does a CGI project take?

A hero still is typically 1 to 2 weeks from approved source data. A full launch suite with animation, stills and social cut-downs is typically 4 to 8 weeks depending on scope and revision cycles.
