Understanding Image Resolution for 3D Renders

The right resolution. The right output.

Image resolution decides whether a render looks sharp or soft, uses budget efficiently or wastes it, and prints or screens correctly. This guide covers pixels, DPI, aspect ratios and how to specify the right resolution for every deliverable.

The maths that decides pixel quality.

Resolution decisions cascade through every downstream stage. Render at too low a resolution and the image looks soft. Render too high and budget disappears into pixels no one sees. Getting resolution right is a small decision with big consequences.

This guide covers the practical maths and the standard resolutions for the deliverables you will most often specify.

    HD and UHD have exact pixel dimensions. Renders at the right resolution pass broadcast QC first time.

Trade-offs

What to plan for.

  • Higher resolution costs render time.

    Doubling resolution quadruples render time on same-sample settings. Specify what is needed, not what might be needed.

  • DPI is context-dependent.

    300 DPI at A4 is fine. 300 DPI at billboard scale is enormous. DPI only makes sense at a print size.

  • Aspect ratios matter.

    Cropping from a poor aspect ratio wastes render. Specify aspect ratio at brief.

  • Real-world print size is often forgotten.

    Print deliverables need real-world dimensions. Just 'high resolution' is not enough.

Where the finished asset ships.

Screen deliverables.

Web hero, PDP still, social banner. Sized in pixels, typically 1920 to 3840 wide.

Print deliverables.

Magazine, catalogue, brochure. Sized in DPI at real-world dimensions, typically 300 DPI at print size.

Retail and packaging.

Product packaging, in-store signage, POS. Higher DPI, real-world dimensions matter.

Out-of-home.

Billboards, transit, digital OOH. Very large real-world dimensions, but usually lower DPI due to viewing distance.

Broadcast and cinema.

HD 1920x1080, UHD 3840x2160, cinema 4K DCP. Standard resolutions, exact aspect ratios.

Interactive and AR.

Web-embedded 3D and AR. Resolution constrained by device performance and bandwidth.

Process

How the work is produced.

  1. STAGE 1

    Identify the deliverable.

    Screen, print, retail, out-of-home, broadcast, interactive. Each has different resolution needs.

  2. STAGE 2

    Specify pixels for screen.

    1920 wide for HD web, 3840 for UHD, larger for hero print-ready outputs. Aspect ratio matters.

  3. STAGE 3

    Specify DPI plus real-world size for print.

    300 DPI at A4, at A3, at A2, at billboard scale. Both numbers required.

  4. STAGE 4

    Specify aspect ratios explicitly.

    16:9, 9:16, 4:5, 1:1. Every runtime has an aspect ratio. Specify it.

  5. STAGE 5

    Render at hero resolution.

    Render at the largest deliverable in the set, downsize for smaller outputs. Cleaner than re-rendering.

  6. STAGE 6

    Archive at hero resolution.

    Final masters archived at hero resolution. Downstream needs (later print, new social specs) reuse the master.

What resolution should I render for web?

1920 wide for standard HD web. 3840 for UHD or Retina displays. Match to the actual hero display size where possible.

What DPI does print need?

300 DPI at print size is standard. Higher for premium fine-art print, lower for billboard where viewing distance is far.

Do I need to render at print resolution if it's for screen too?

Yes. Render at the largest deliverable in the set, downsize for others. Rendering twice is wasteful.

What is DPI on-screen?

DPI is meaningless on screen. Screens are sized in pixels, and pixel density (retina, standard, low-DPI) is a device attribute, not a file attribute.
