Trade-offs

What to plan for.

  • Model needs to be AR-optimised.

    AR models must be lightweight, correctly scaled to real-world units, and have baked materials. A hero-render model rarely ships to AR as-is, retopology and material baking are usually required.

  • iOS and Android formats differ.

    iOS Quick Look needs USDZ, Android needs GLB. Both must be produced and kept in sync when the model is revised. Standard model-viewer wraps this into one embed but the assets are still separate.

  • Bandwidth cost on mobile.

    AR models are typically a few megabytes each. Modern mobile networks handle this fine, but budget for the CDN traffic on high-volume listings.

  • CORS on GLB files.

    When AR assets are served from a different origin to the page, CORS must be configured on the asset host. Same-origin serving avoids this entirely and is the safest default.

  • AR does not replace stills.

    AR sits alongside stills, animation and product film, it is not a substitute. The product page still needs strong photography or CGI to drive the initial click into AR.

Before you start

Project checklist.

You do not need all of these on day one. But the more of this we have at brief, the faster the project moves and the fewer clarifying rounds it needs.

  • Source 3D model or CAD.

    An existing production-ready model, or CAD (STEP, IGES, SolidWorks, Parasolid). Photography-only source is possible but slower.

  • Real-world dimensions.

    The product's true dimensions in millimetres or metres. AR must preview at correct scale in the buyer's space, and small errors show up immediately.

  • Material and finish spec.

    Colour codes (Pantone), material types (matte plastic, brushed metal, satin fabric) and any physical swatches or reference imagery.

  • Colourway list, if applicable.

    If the AR viewer needs to switch variants, we need every colourway or finish in the range plus a swatch for the UI.

Process

How the work is produced.

  1. STAGE 1

    Source model or CAD.

    Start from an existing production-ready 3D model, or from CAD if this is a launch build. AR usually reuses the model already produced for stills and animation.

  2. STAGE 2

    Retopology and scale.

    Geometry is retopologised for real-time performance, and scale is anchored to real-world units so the AR preview lands at true product size.

  3. STAGE 3

    Materials and baking.

    PBR materials are set up (base colour, normal, roughness, metalness) and baked into map textures. Detail from a high-poly source is preserved through normal maps.

  4. STAGE 4

    GLB and USDZ export.

    The model is exported as GLB for web and Android and USDZ for iOS Quick Look. Both are validated on-device before delivery.

  5. STAGE 5

    Embed and test.

    model-viewer is embedded on the product page with AR entry buttons. We test on real iOS and Android hardware, checking scale, orientation and material fidelity.

  6. STAGE 6

    Launch and iterate.

    The asset ships behind the product page. Analytics on AR entries and dwell time feed the next iteration, colourway additions, size variants, model refinements.

    Starting a project

    You send everything you have, drawings, CAD, existing 3D models, mood boards, colourway lists. We do not need it all, but the more we have at kick-off, the faster the brief locks.

  2. STEP 2

    Reviewing information

    We review what you've sent, confirm scale and colourway coverage, and follow up on anything unclear. A short call always helps here to align on the AR user experience.

  3. STEP 3

    Execution

    We prep the model, bake materials, export the platform pair (GLB + USDZ) and stage the model-viewer embed. Progress lands at agreed milestones.

  4. STEP 4

    Reviewing

    We share a staging embed for you to test on real iOS and Android devices. You mark up scale, material, colour and interaction feedback.

  5. STEP 5

    Approval and handover

    You sign off, we hand over the final GLB, USDZ and embed code, ready to drop into your product page or configurator.

What is product augmented reality?

Do buyers need to install an app to view AR?

Not usually. Web AR via model-viewer uses iOS Quick Look on Apple devices and Scene Viewer on Android, both are native, no-install experiences launched directly from the browser.

What file formats does product AR need?
